How to Take Care Of Brass, Gilt and Bronze Chandeliers

Cleaning: Clean the chandelier regularly to prevent the buildup of dirt, dust, and grime. Use a soft, damp cloth to wipe down the surface, being careful not to rub too hard or leave water spots. You can also use a specialized brass cleaner for stubborn grime or tarnish.

Brass is incredibly sturdy and can endure for centuries. We do not coat the majority of our brass finishes; instead, we let the brass age naturally and then apply natural beeswax to give it a unique and profound look that can only be achieved with a lengthy amount of time.

Dusting your chandeliers should be sufficient to keep them looking vibrant, but not excessively glossy. Unnecessary handling should be avoided, as the acid on human fingertips can damage the finish. If you would like to add more sparkle, a light waxing with 0000-grade steel wool should do the trick. Dip the steel wool into a small jar of pure beeswax, and rub the surface lightly in a circular motion. Make sure not to overdo it. Once you’re done, use a soft cotton cloth to buff the surface. If you wish to have a bit more protection for the finish, apply some more wax and buff it with the cloth.

It is not recommended to clean our Antique Brass finish with abrasive metal cleaners, as this will remove the unique features developed by the aging process used by our artisans. The patina on the surface of antique brass accumulates and develops through the years, adding to its beauty.

Both Gilt and Bronze finishes are delicate and should not be cleaned with too much force. It is best to avoid excessive handling since the acid in the fingertips can cause harm to the surface. A gentle dusting with a soft brush or a cotton cloth is recommended. Additionally, a light application and buffing with pure beeswax and a cotton cloth can help protect the finish. Avoid using any chemicals, cleaners, or anything abrasive as it could potentially damage the finish.

Protection:  To ensure the longevity of your chandelier, it is important to protect it from the elements. Moisture and humidity should be avoided, as this can lead to tarnishing. If the chandelier is exposed to these elements, you may want to consider applying a protective coating. Wax or silicone spray are both good options as they are clear and do not alter the appearance of the chandelier. A protective coating will reduce the risk of tarnishing and prevent damage from moisture and humidity.

Maintenance:  In order to ensure that your chandelier provides you with years of lighting and décor, regular maintenance is essential. Inspecting the wiring and screws on a regular basis ensures that they remain secure and tight, protecting your chandelier from potential damage in the future. If you come across any loose parts or wiring, consulting with a professional for repair is recommended. This way, you can be sure that your chandelier has been fixed properly, keeping it safe for many years to come. Regular maintenance should not be overlooked – it can help prolong the life of your chandelier significantly. By tending to your chandelier’s needs regularly, you are making an investment in its longevity and safety.

Professional cleaning:  If you need deeper cleaning or maintenance for your chandelier, it’s best to reach out to a professional.
